Hemp 101
Contrary to popular belief, hemp and CBD products are not the same as marijuana. Hemp belongs to the Cannaceae family but is of the Sativa variety of cannabis. Additionally, hemp contains significantly lower amounts of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) than the psychoactive substances found in the marijuana or hashish that hemp is often confused with. Here at TWINE CBD, our experts utilize CBD Isolate to eliminate THC from hemp-derived CBD entirely to help you perform and sleep at optimum levels.
The History of Hemp
According to The History of Cannabis Museum, historians speculate hemp may be responsible for the development of civilization itself. Archaeologists believe hemp originated in Central Asia as one of the first and oldest human agriculture crops, where it was harvested for more than 10,000 years. Excavations in China show that hemp seeds and cannabis oil were used for food, and to create textiles, fishing nets, rope, clothes, and paper. Further, hemp was often utilized for its medicinal and spiritual properties.
Today, hemp is used worldwide similarly for various goods, including biodegradable plastics and CBD products like CBD Oils, CBD Gummies, CBD Topicals, and even CBD Pet Products. The relationship with hemp and CBD products in the United States, however, is somewhat complicated.
History of Hemp in the United States
Until the Agriculture Improvement Act of 2018, otherwise known as the farm bill, hemp was defined as cannabis and was listed as marijuana as part of the Controlled Substances Act (CSA). Prior to 2018, production went unmonitored by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), leading to potential mislabeling and product safety concerns. Since then, the FDA has maintained regulatory requirements to ensure accurate labeling and safe access to cannabis and cannabis-derived creations, such as hemp and other CBD products.
